IHOP Birthday Reward: How the PanCoins Actually Work

IHOP gives you five PanCoins on your birthday, and a Full Stack of pancakes costs exactly five. The birthday gift covers a full stack outright with nothing to add. You have to register for an International Bank of Pancakes account at least seven days beforehand.

What IHOP Is

IHOP, the International House of Pancakes, is an American diner chain built on all-day breakfast: pancakes, omelettes, French toast, crepes and combo plates, alongside burgers and dinner entrees. It runs a mostly franchised system across the United States and is owned by Dine Brands Global, the same parent as Applebee’s, though the two loyalty programs are entirely separate.

The Currency Is The Point

IHOP’s rewards program is literally themed as a bank. You earn PanCoins and spend them on menu items:

Birthday gift: 5 PanCoins
Short Stack: 3 PanCoins
Full Stack: 5 PanCoins
Earn rate: 1 PanCoin per spent

Because the gift matches the Full Stack price exactly, the birthday reward is a complete meal rather than a discount toward one. That is unusually clean. Most chains hand out a percentage or a credit that still needs topping up.

When The PanCoins Arrive

It would be easy to assume the PanCoins arrive on the first day of your birthday month, which would give you a full month to use them.

IHOP’s terms say the coins arrive on your birthday. Not the first of the month. The terms govern, and planning around a month-long window that is not written down anywhere is how people miss it.

The Rules Around The Edges

Coins earned after July 2025 expire 365 days after you earn them, so a balance built slowly can age out before it is worth spending.

You can use one coupon per day and they are not combinable, so a birthday visit is not the day to also redeem something else you have been saving.

Eligibility starts at 13, which is unusually low. Most restaurant loyalty programs require 18, and Denny’s does. A teenager can hold an IHOP account in their own name and collect their own birthday stack.

What The Earn Rate Means In Practice

At 1 PanCoin per $5, a Full Stack costs the equivalent of $25 of spending. So the birthday gift is worth roughly what a $25 visit would earn you, which puts a real number on it rather than leaving it as “a free item.”

It also means the program rewards regular visits rather than occasional large ones, since the coins accrue per dollar with no tier multipliers to chase. For a once-a-year visitor, the birthday gift is effectively the entire value of belonging.
