Picking a lunch or dinner spot for your birthday? Chipotle gives you a free side or drink, Firehouse Subs a free medium sub with a $1 minimum purchase, and Papa John’s and Cracker Barrel each give a free dessert. Red Robin gives kids 17 and under $7 off a check in their birthday month. Subway promises a birthday surprise and doesn’t name it. Check the timing before your birthday month: Cracker Barrel needs your birthday on file before the first day of your birth month, Papa John’s and Cracker Barrel both want a purchase in the past year, and Firehouse Subs gives you only three days. Terms change, so check the chain’s page before you go.

A free item
Chipotle: one free birthday reward for Chipotle Rewards members, your pick of chips, guac, queso or a drink, and you have the whole birthday month to choose it. Your birthday goes on your account when you register. Chipotle typically allows one reward per order, so a reward, a coupon and a promo code can’t be combined.
Firehouse Subs: a free medium sub with a $1 minimum purchase, available the day before your birthday, on your birthday and the day after. Put your birthday on your account before the day or on it, because joining after your birthday means waiting until next year. The program covers the 48 contiguous states, Alaska and D.C.
Papa John’s: a free dessert in your Papa Rewards account on your birthday, good for 14 days, for members who’ve bought something in the last year. It works only at papajohns.com and in the app, not by phone or walk-in, and you pay any delivery fee. Papa John’s doesn’t say which dessert.
Cracker Barrel: one free dessert for Rewards members, with your birthday on file before the first day of your birth month and a purchase in the 12 months before your birthdate. The dessert loads within 72 hours of the first day of your birth month and has to be used within 45 days. Add-on items are excluded.
A kids’ discount
Red Robin: $7.00 off a check with a minimum accompanying purchase of $4.99, for a child 17 or under, once during their birthday month. Add the child’s birthday to your Red Robin Royalty account, and bring the child, since it’s dine-in only.
A surprise, no item named
Subway: Sub Club members get a birthday surprise, and Subway doesn’t name it or say whether you need to buy something first. Save your birthday in your Sub Club profile, which is open to U.S. residents 18 or older, and check your account around your birthday.
