Build-A-Bear lets a birthday child pay their age for a Birthday Treat Bear, so a 5-year-old pays $5 for a bear that regularly costs $14. It runs all month, in stores only, for Bonus Club members, and the child has to be there. Bonus Club members also get an unspecified “special reward” on their birthday.
What Build-A-Bear Is
Wikipedia describes the company this way: “Build-A-Bear Workshop, Inc. is an American retailer headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri.” You pick an animal, stuff it in the store and dress it, which is why the birthday offer is built around the child standing at the counter. The offer is called Pay Your Age on the birthday page and Count Your Candles in its own FAQ, and both names mean the same deal.
How To Get The Build-A-Bear Birthday Deal
Build-A-Bear’s birthday page says: “The age they are turning is how much our special Birthday Treat Bear costs during their birthday month!” The offer belongs to Bonus Club members: “Our Pay Your Age birthday month offer is available in stores only to Build-A-Bear Bonus Club members. If you’re not a Bonus Club member, it’s FREE and EASY to join.” Walk in during the birthday month and tell a Bear Builder it’s a birthday. The FAQ explains the counting: “just let us know you’re celebrating a birthday and together we will “count their candles” to let us know how old they are turning.”
What You Don’t Need
No coupon and no birth date on file: “There is no coupon needed for Count Your Candles! Just confirm your Bonus Club account details (email address, phone number or account number) at checkout!” On proof of age, the FAQ says “No need to bring in any proof of age or identification.” On the account, it says “At this time, you do not need to indicate your child’s birthday in your Bonus Club account. Just visit the Workshop during your child’s birthday month, and we’ll take it from there!”
The Child Doesn’t Need Their Own Account
This is the part parents ask about. The Bonus Club is an adult program, and the FAQ spells out how that works: “Guests must be 18 years old or older to sign up for Build-A-Bear Bonus Club; therefore, children under 18 are not required to sign up for Bonus Club.” The child “need only accompany a Bonus Club member, or an adult over the age of 18 who signs up to become a Bonus Club member, during the month of their birthday.”
The Fine Print
The offer text lists its limits in one line: “Offer valid for Bonus Club members. Offer valid in stores only. Offer valid on Birthday Treat Bear only. Offer subject to change without notice. Limit one per guest, must be present for offer. Cannot be combined with any other offer. While supplies last. Outfits and accessories sold separately. Minimum price $1.” So a 1-year-old pays $1, not nothing, and the stuffing and the outfit are extra. The FAQ also covers stock: stores intend to carry the Birthday Treat Bear at all times, but outages can happen, and it recommends calling your local Workshop before you go. The offer isn’t valid at Build-A-Bear locations inside other retailers or restaurants, and the list includes Great Wolf Lodge, Rainforest Cafe and the Build-A-Dino Experience.
The Birthday Reward For Members
The Bonus Club page says “Your birthday is our favorite day of the year. We CAN’T WAIT to surprise you with a special reward.” The birthday page repeats it under “Bonus Club Birthday Benefits.” Neither page names the reward, its size or how it arrives, so this post can’t give you the amount. Ordinary Bonus Club earning is stated: “Earn 1 point for every $1 you spend. Get $10 in rewards for every 100 points.”
What The Old Post Got Wrong
An earlier version called the loyalty program “Bear Bucks.” The pages now name it the Bonus Club, and Bear Bucks appears only as the name of the gift cards. It also described the offer as a gift for a special someone, but the child has to be present in the store to get the price.
What Was Actually Checked
The birthday page, the Bonus Club page, its FAQ and its terms were read through Internet Archive copies dated between May and September 2026, and Wikipedia was read directly on 2026-10-07. Build-A-Bear’s own site refused WebFetch and a plain page fetch with an HTTP 403 and an “Access Denied” page, and headless Chrome timed out, so this post doesn’t rest on a live reading of the site. The birthday page copy is from 2026-07-08. Check the live birthday page before you go, because offers like this one change.
Eligibility and Cost
An adult 18 or older joins the Bonus Club for free, and the terms say no purchase is necessary to join. The terms limit membership to residents of the U.S., Puerto Rico or Canada with a valid email address, while the birthday FAQ says the offer runs “in all US, Canada and UK Build-A-Bear Workshop stores and outlets.” The price is the child’s age, with a $1 minimum.
