You check three different grocery chains for a birthday reward, and all three genuinely have one. Then you read the fine print on two of them and realize “having an account” was never actually the requirement.

These have a real reward, free to join, no extra gate
Publix: a free bar cake or ice cream, but your birthday has to be on file at least 10 days ahead, a real deadline most competitors don’t have.
Safeway and Albertsons: up to $10 through the shared for U platform, posted the first of your birthday month, as long as you’ve made one purchase in the prior 12 months.
These require something beyond just signing up
Kroger‘s free Plus card has nothing. The Kroger Credit Card does: a real $10 reward, once a year, read directly from the legal terms. If you’d rather skip the card, Kroger also carries a genuine 2.5% Fluz cashback rate as an alternative.
H-E-B‘s free rewards account has nothing either. The paid Favor Gold subscription ($9.99/month) does, confirmed directly in Favor’s own subscription terms.
These have nothing, but still pay real cashback
Giant Eagle and Meijer both have no birthday element in their loyalty programs. Both carry a real, merchant-specific 2.5% cashback rate through Fluz instead, well above the generic 1.5% card.
These have nothing at all
Wegmans: checked across both its Shoppers Club FAQ and its full site terms (over 71,000 characters), zero mentions of a birthday anywhere.
ShopRite: a real, detailed Price Plus Club with no birthday element in it.
Still being checked
Hy-Vee is still being verified first-party and will be added to this list once confirmed rather than typed on a vague marketing snippet alone.
